Steve Hook graduated from Columbia River High School in 1969 and took his athletic talents to Clark College, where he played for head coach, Rod Smith.  In his freshman year, Steve led the Penguins to a 20-9 record and 2nd place finish in the league.  They also placed 5th in the state tournament.  Steve averaged 19 points per game and was name 2nd team All-League,

Steve returned his sophomore year, putting up even greater numbers.  He averaged 24 points per game and led the team to a 21-8 record and another 2nd place league finish.  The team also had impressive wins over both the Oregon State and Oregon freshman teams.  Steve was honored with a spot on the 1st Team All-League and 2nd Team State All-Tournament award.  And with his two outstanding years at Clark College, he remains as the All-Time leader in scoring for men’s basketball.

After leaving Clark, he continued his college career at Eastern Washington State College, where he played 1971-73 for head coach, Jerry Krause.  In his junior year and first at Eastern, Steve averaged 12 points per game and helped the team to a 22-7 overall record.  It was the first time in 20 years that the Eagles had won over 20 games.  In Steve’s senior year, he was named Team Captain and led the team to a 16-10 record while averaging 16 points per game.  He was named to the 2nd Team All-League.  He graduated from Eastern Washington in 1974.

In 1974, he began teaching math at Gaiser Jr. High. Steve also coached 7th, 8th and 9th grade boys and girls basketball.  From 1986 - 2002, he taught math at Fort Vancouver High School.  During this time at Fort Vancouver, he also coached basketball as an assistant for five years, and head coach for one year.  From 1992-97, he spent time coaching youth sports.  Steve then started coaching at Skyview High School in 1998 as the assistant girls coach.  In 2002, he began teaching math at Skyview, and also became the head girl’s coach at Skyview.  Steve retired from teaching in 2005, but continued to coach at Skyview until 2010.  His record as a head basketball coach was an impressive 137-63.  That is an average of 17 wins per season.  And not once did his teams have a losing season.  Steve took his team to two state tournaments (2007 and 2008) and they placed 5th in 2008.  In 2009, Skyview was District Champions and League Champs in 2009 and 2010.  He was named Coach of the Year in the Greater St. Helen’s League three times.

After coaching and teaching in the Vancouver School District, Steve retired in 2010.  He has remained very involved in the community as a youth basketball coach for girls and boys, as well as a Little League baseball coach, and is a Board member of the Salmon Creek Little League.  Steve has supervised the Skyview HS girl’s basketball team in adopting three families during the holiday season (Share House).  He has promoted pizza parties at Skyview for the adopted families and children where the players could meet with them and food and gifts were presented to the families and children.  During the holidays over the years, Steve has participated in “Walk & Knock”.

Steve currently resides in Vancouver with his wife Pam, but spends his winter months in Phoenix engaging in a favorite pastime – golf!  He also enjoys camping, biking, hiking, reading, hanging out by the pool, and spending time with his grandkids, Keegan and McKenzie.  He and Pam have two children:  daughter Kari and son Aaron.
