M Hicks-Oliver - Multis Champ

Freshmen Duo Impress in Heptathlon with Top NWAC Rankings and Personal Bests

Recapping track and field multi-event action in Eugene

EUGENE, Ore. - The future is bright for this freshman heptathlon squad, as Sally Gould and teammate Mia Hicks-Oliver delivered standout performances across all seven events, collecting personal records, top NWAC rankings, and a surge of competitive momentum.

Clark College freshman Mia Hicks-Oliver delivered a dominant performance at the 2025 NWAC Multi-Event Championships, claiming the Heptathlon title with a personal-best total of 4,382 points. Her versatility, consistency, and competitive edge across all seven events proved key to her championship win.

Sally Gould set the tone with personal bests in the 100m hurdles (16.91, NWAC #12) and the 800m (3:15.26, NWAC #45). She continued to show promise in the sprints with a 27.70 in the 200m (NWAC #19) and demonstrated her versatility with consistent efforts in the field: 1.28m high jump, 21.59m javelin throw (NWAC #27), 5.01m long jump, and 6.97m shot put. With five top-50 NWAC rankings and steady performances across the board, Gould proved she's a rising all-around talent.

Her teammate, Mia Hicks-Oliver, delivered one of the top overall heptathlon showings in the NWAC this season. She claimed NWAC's #1 time in the 200m (25.22) and added two more personal bests in the 100m hurdles (15.92, NWAC #3) and 800m (2:25.54, NWAC #7). In the field, she posted 1.43m in the high jump (NWAC #10), 32.02m in the javelin (NWAC #12), 5.08m in the long jump, and 8.02m in the shot put (PR, NWAC #37). Mia's first-place finish in the 200m and long jump, along with consistent top-tier performances in other events, her well-rounded talent and determination. Her results now rank among the top competitors in the NWAC accorss multiple disciplines.

Together, this freshman pair racked up a wave of PRs, top-10 NWAC placements, and valuable heptathlon points—marking a successful showing and signaling even greater potential as the season progresses.

"What Mia accomplished over the last two days was unlike anything I've seen in sports," said Head Coach Owen Frasier. "Two PRs in six of seven events, finish first in the one she didn't PR in, and then set a school record for the 200m during the Championship was unbelievable. Her score was also the fourth best in school history.

"Still, what stands out to me about Mia is her character. Just the fact that she's in the heptathlon alone is a great testament to that. She didn't come to Clark to be a heptathlete, but she accepted the challenge because she knew her team needed her to do it. She sacrificed a lot in her best individual events to do this for us. She was such a humble champion as well. You could tell how much the other athletes respected her and thought of her by how happy they were to see her win. We're most proud of that.

"Mia came in as a huge underdog, projected to finish 500 points behind the winner but she wasn't intimidated. She has always been an underdog coming from a small school in a small town.

"Mia's championship has was obviously all about her and her determination and commitment, but I know she's thankful for her coaches and all they did an amazing job of getting her ready for this. Her winning was a complete coaching staff effort.

"It's also important that we recognize how great Sally performed as well. Her score of 3100 would have finished seventh last year. It was just infortunate that this year the heptathlon was so loaded with talent. She did earn us 3 points toward our Southern Region score and she was so gracious and supportive of Mia. She was genuinely very happy to see her win and that speaks volumes to Sally's character as well."

When asked about her performance, Hicks-Oliver said, "It feels so amazing! I want to thank SWOC; they were such an amazing team to be with. I want to thank literally everybody. Such a great environment. Great community and I love everyone here. I want to thank my team and coaches. I feel so blessed and am so appreciative!"

Mia Hicks-Oliver's victory not only secures her a place in the record books but also sets the tone for a promising collegiate career ahead. With her first-place finish, the Penguins enter the NWAC Track & Field Championship with 10 points already to their name. Congratulations to Mia and the Clark College coaching staff on this incredible achievement!
