VANCOUVER, Wash. – Another week Penguin Athletics. In case you missed it, below is a breakdown of all the action from the last week and update on the current happenings.
WOMEN'S SOCCER (12-3-1)
Women's soccer had a busy week at home.
Monday, the ladies traveled to Green River for a make-up game. The penguins came away with a 2-0 victory (box score).
Chloe Klappholz hit in a PK in the 73 minute to give the penguins a 1-0 lead. Kelsey Cordon followed up with a long shot over the keeper in the 89th minute.
The ladies then hosted Grays Harbor on Wednesday, in what would end up being a 15-0 victory for the penguins. (box score)
Abby Severse, Stephanie Llanos, Madisen Kramer, Kelli Huskic, Anna Neal, Jamie Jeschke, Lillian Mucha, Citlaly Soto, and Camille Rios would all score for the Penguins.
Kelli Huskic also became the career goals leader for the Penguins, leaving her name in the record books.
Saturday, the Penguins hosted Highline in a game that would determine final playoff positions for both teams.
Huskic scored in the 5th minute from 30 yards back, to give the Penguins an early lead, which they would never look back on. Huskic would score again in the 37th minute, followed by Shalece Easley in the 45th and Anna Neal in the 68th. (box score).
The 4-0 victory solidified home field advantage in the first-round of the NWAC playoffs.
The Penguins will face the #3 team from the North Region, Shoreline, at 2:00pm at Harmony Sports Complex, Field 7, Wednesday, Nov. 2nd. Winner will then travel to face the #1 team in the South, Portland on Saturday, November 5.
MEN'S SOCCER (6-10-0)
On Wednesday, the men traveled to Pierce to solidify their position in the standing. The men would fall behind in the 40th minute, however the second half would be dominated by the Penguins.
Wilson Fresh, off an assist by Max Schaeffer and Miciah Kirton would tie the game in the 60th minute. Fresh would then secure the victory for the penguins with the lead goal in the 79th minute. (box score)
The men would host Highline in their final home game, Saturday. With no impact to their standings, having secured the third spot, the game would show to be a game of two halves.
Highline would come out quick, scoring in the first 6 minutes of the game. At halftime their lead would increase to 4-0. However, the Penguins would come out the second half aggressive, with sophomore Payton Childers scoring twice.
The men will travel to Whatcom for the first round of the NWAC playoffs, Wednesday, Nov 2. Game time to be announced soon.
VOLLEYBALL (13-13, 6-8)
Volleyball kicked of their final week of home games hosting Clackamas for their annual Dig Pink Night.
The ladies would dominate set one (25-11) before falling in set two (25-22). They would then rally to come back and take sets three (25-19) and four (25-15) with an energetic crowd behind them. (box score).
Leading the stats were Brooklyn Byers with 17 kills, followed by Jordayn Murphy with 13.
Kloee Harris had 3 Aces an 5 blocks. Iliana Bills would also have 5 blocks on the night.
Rachel Gallagher would tally 42 assists.
Alana Gaalema would lead with 20 digs.
Friday, would be the final home game for the Penguins and the last time the sophomores would play on their home court.
Hosting Chemeketa, the ladies found themselves in a battle to keep their playoff hopes alive, ultimately, falling to the storm 1-3 (boxscore).
Leading in kills was Byers (17) aces with (4) and blocks with (3). Gallagher led in assists (36) and Gaalema with Digs (15).
The Penguins will finish their season on the road, traveling to #1 Linn Benton, Wednesday, followed by a trip over the bridge to Mt. Hood Friday.
CROSS COUNTRY
Cross Country entered into their postseason this week, traveling to Clackamas to compete in the Southern Region Championship meet.
With four teams scoring on the men's side, the Penguins would earn second place, over Treasure Valley and Umpqua.
Top runners were Gary Sherman who finished sixth overall (5:39.0), Norman Hartman (5:56.9), Stanley Johnson (5:57.4), Evan Hebblethwaite (5:57.7), Dylan Ho (6:02.5), Will Niskanen (6:08.3), David Mirenta (6:26.2).
The women would also come away from the meet earning hardware for their second-place finish, with a decent lead over Umpqua and Treasure Valley.
Top runners on the women's side were Jane Kuebrich who crossed the line 7th overall (6:38.0), Emily Thompson (6:51.5), Emily Anderson (6:55.3), Raleena Maxson (7:00.8), Chloe Crawford 7:09.2), Morgan Hill (7:20.4), and Madison Palek (7:21.8).

The cross country teams will have the week off to prepare for the NWAC meet scheduled for Saturday, November 12 at Chambers Bay Golf Course.
