VANCOUVER, WA - Clark College faced a tough test at home on April 3, dropping both games of a doubleheader to a powerful Southwestern Oregon lineup at Raines Field.
Game 1 proved to be challenging.
Southwestern Oregon jumped out early and never let up, piling up 13 hits in a 12–0 win. A five-run second inning put Clark in an early hole, and defensive struggles compounded the problem as the Penguins committed five errors. Clark was limited to four hits and was unable to generate any sustained offense against a strong pitching performance from the visitors.
In Game 2, the Penguins showed early fight despite a rough start. After falling behind 3–0 in the opening inning, Clark answered immediately. Rylee Purdom delivered a two-run double to get the Penguins on the board, and Zoey Mikkelsen followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 3–3.
The momentum, however, was short-lived.
Southwestern Oregon responded in the second inning and then broke the game open in the fourth with a five-run outburst, highlighted by a grand slam that pushed the lead to 8–3. The visitors added more late to secure an 11–3 victory. Clark managed six hits in the game, with Mercedez Berduo-Flores leading the way with a perfect performance at the plate, but couldn't keep pace with Southwestern Oregon's offense.
Despite the results, Clark showed flashes of offensive potential in Game 2Â and continued to compete throughout the day. The doubleheader ultimately highlighted areas for growth, particularly defensively, while also underscoring the level of competition within the conference.
