OREGON CITY - Clark College controlled the glass and got a big night from Ari Richardson, but Clackamas used a dominant scoring performance and efficient shooting to pull away late for an 87-78 win Wednesday night.
Richardson led Clark with 23 points in 38 minutes, hitting 4 of 14 from three-point range and a perfect 9 for 9 at the free-throw line. Despite finishing 5 of 20 from the field, the sophomore guard consistently attacked the rim and kept the Penguins within striking distance.
Clark (78 points) placed four starters in double figures. Tristan Pratt scored 14 points on an efficient 6-of-9 shooting night and added six rebounds, while Noah Tostovrsnik recorded a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Zion Milare contributed 11 points and four assists in a full 40-minute effort, and Micah Gentry chipped in 13 points and three assists.
The Penguins did much of their damage on the boards. Clark grabbed 13 offensive rebounds and finished with 38 total, repeatedly creating second-chance opportunities. Tostovrsnik was especially effective inside, pulling down five offensive boards and controlling the defensive glass.
But Clackamas countered with efficiency.
Connor Oertel delivered a game-high 32 points on 13-of-21 shooting, including 4 of 7 from beyond the arc, while also collecting 11 rebounds. Lincoln Satterthwaite added 16 points and eight rebounds, and Colton Blackham finished with 13 points and seven assists. As a team, Clackamas shot 48.4 percent from the field and 38.1 percent from three-point range.
Clark stayed within reach for much of the contest, but Clackamas' ability to convert at the free-throw line — 17 of 18 — helped maintain separation. The Penguins shot 18 of 26 from the stripe and 39.7 percent overall, including 6 of 24 from three-point range.
Clark also forced 14 turnovers and totaled 17 assists on 27 made field goals, showing flashes of fluid offensive movement. However, Clackamas' shooting efficiency and Oertel's scoring outburst ultimately proved to be the difference.
Clark will look to build on its rebounding strength and balanced scoring effort as it prepares for its next matchup.
