Penguin Softball Falls to the Riverhawks

Recapping today's softball action against Umpqua

VANCOUVER, Wash. - Game 1 - The Clark College Penguins came up short in a hard-fought battle against the Umpqua Riverhawks, falling 6-2 in a conference game on Tuesday afternoon. Despite a strong defensive effort, costly errors and missed opportunities at the plate proved too much for the Penguins to overcome.

Clark (2-10, 0-4 conference) got on the board early, scoring in the second inning after a key hit by Paige Scoggin. The Penguins added another run in the fifth, thanks to a solo home run that briefly energized the home crowd. However, Umpqua (1-13, 0-6 conference) responded with multiple scoring innings, including two runs in the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings to seal the win.

Delaney Bollman started on the mound for Clark, putting up a solid performance through 5.1 innings, allowing just two earned runs while striking out three batters. However, the bullpen struggled to contain Umpqua's late-inning offense, and defensive miscues—including four errors—allowed the Riverhawks to capitalize on scoring chances.

Clark managed six hits in the game, but struggled to drive in runs with runners in scoring position. The Penguins left six runners on base, unable to break through against Umpqua's pitching.

Game 2 - The Clark College Penguins suffered a tough loss to Umpqua, falling 13-3 in a five-inning contest on Tuesday afternoon. Defensive struggles and an early deficit proved too much for Clark to overcome as Umpqua capitalized on scoring opportunities throughout the game.

Clark (2-12, 0-5 conference) found themselves in a hole early, allowing five runs in the first inning. Despite a brief offensive spark in the fourth and fifth innings, the Penguins were unable to keep pace with the Riverhawks, who racked up 13 runs on 11 hits.

Clark's pitching staff struggled against Umpqua's aggressive offense, surrendering 13 runs (10 earned) on 11 hits while walking five batters. Starting pitcher Isabella Weibe threw three innings, allowing eight runs on eight hits while striking out one. Lily Ferres entered in relief but was unable to slow down Umpqua's bats.

Defensive errors also played a role in the loss, as the Penguins committed two errors that extended innings and led to additional runs.

Despite the loss, Clark saw solid performances at the plate from several players. Kiarra Webb (1-for-2, 1 RBI) and Promise Bond (0-for-3, 1 RBI) drove in runs, while Ashlynn Runnels picked up an RBI on a bases-loaded walk. Ashley Griffith reached base and scored a run after working a walk in the fourth inning.

Clark's best chance to rally came in the fourth and fifth innings, where they plated all three of their runs, but Umpqua's pitching held firm to secure the run-rule victory.

Clark will look to rebound in their next game as they continue conference play. The Penguins are set to face Centralia on Friday, hoping to tighten up their defense and find consistency on the mound.
