Penguins Split with Blue Mountain

PENDLETON, Ore. - Game 1 - In a game marked by momentum swings, Blue Mountain College rallied from an early deficit to defeat Clark College 10-5 on Saturday. The Timberwolves capitalized on timely hitting and Clark's defensive miscues to secure the win.

Clark jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to a clutch two-RBI single by Quentin Anguay. They extended their lead to 5-1 in the third inning when Trevin Long's sacrifice fly brought in another run. However, defensive struggles and key hits by Blue Mountain allowed the Timberwolves to claw back into the game.

Blue Mountain's comeback started in the bottom of the third with J. Roth's RBI groundout, cutting the lead to 5-2. The turning point came in the fifth inning when J. Cardenes tripled, clearing the bases and tying the game at 5-5. The Timberwolves then took the lead in the sixth after an error allowed N. Vibbert to reach base, setting up A. Dean's RBI single. Another defensive miscue allowed an additional run to score, giving Blue Mountain a 7-5 advantage.

Clark's bullpen struggled to contain Blue Mountain's offense in the later innings. Travis Gibson took the loss after allowing two unearned runs in the sixth. Blue Mountain's relief corps, led by C. Crowther (1-0) and J. Schow (S, 1), shut down Clark's offense over the final four innings, limiting them to just one hit.

Offensively, Clark managed six hits, with Anguay leading the way, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Trevin Long added a hit and an RBI, while Kaiden Hernandez reached base four times via a hit, two walks, and a hit-by-pitch.

For Blue Mountain, Ry. Loftis and E. Gant led the charge, each recording two hits. Cardenes delivered the biggest hit of the game with his three-run triple, while Roth added two RBIs.

Both teams will look to clean up their play after combining for eight errors.

Game 2 - The Clark baseball team broke open a tight contest with a late offensive surge, rolling to an 11-1 victory over Blue Mountain on Saturday afternoon.

The Penguins (5-6) used a five-run eighth inning to put the game out of reach and rode a stellar complete-game performance from starting pitcher Evan McGuire, who earned the win by allowing just one run on six hits while striking out 10 over nine innings.

Clark struck first in the second inning, capitalizing on a fielding miscue and a sacrifice to plate two unearned runs. Blue Mountain (6-7) responded in the bottom half, with J. Briones delivering an RBI single to cut the deficit to 2-1. That, however, would be the only offense the Timberwolves could muster against McGuire, who kept hitters off balance all afternoon.

A sacrifice groundout from Morrie Solam in the fifth extended Clark's lead to 3-1, and a wild pitch in the seventh made it 4-1 before the Penguins exploded for five runs in the eighth. The rally was sparked by a hit batter, a walk, and an error, allowing Clark to capitalize on Blue Mountain's miscues. The scoring outburst included RBIs from Jase Pashales, McGuire, and Rylan Taguchi.

Clark tacked on two more unearned runs in the ninth, capping an 11-run effort despite managing just seven hits. Anguay led the offense with three runs scored, while McGuire contributed at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance and two RBIs.

Blue Mountain struggled to get anything going against McGuire, managing only six hits while striking out 10 times. The Timberwolves also committed four errors, leading to multiple unearned runs. Starting pitcher E. Gant (0-1) took the loss, allowing three runs (one earned) over five innings.

Clark will look to keep the momentum going as they return to action next week, while Blue Mountain will aim to bounce back from the tough defeat.
