VANCOUVER, WA – Game 1 - Clackamas used a late offensive surge and a dominant pitching performance from K. West to cruise past Clark, 8-1, in an NWAC matchup on Tuesday afternoon.
West not only went the distance in the circle, allowing just one earned run on four hits while striking out three, but also helped her own cause at the plate, smashing a solo home run as part of Clackamas' offensive attack.
Clark (2-6) struck first in the opening inning when A. Griffith doubled and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Kiarra Webb. However, that was all the offense the Penguins could muster, as West settled in and shut them down for the remainder of the game.
Clackamas (5-7) responded in the second and third innings, tying the game on an RBI hit by A. McArthur before taking the lead for good in the third. The Cougars then broke the game open with a three-run fifth, highlighted by a bases-clearing triple from J. Rush. Another three-run burst in the sixth inning put the game out of reach, with West's homer capping off the scoring.
Clark's defense struggled, committing three errors that contributed to Clackamas' big innings. Meanwhile, Clark's starter, Lily Ferres, battled through seven innings but took the loss after giving up eight runs (five earned) on six hits.
