TUKWILA, Wash. – Clark College kept the match close early but couldn't hold off a strong second-half surge from Highline, falling 5–1 in NWAC men's soccer action Wednesday afternoon at Starfire Sports Complex.
Sophomore forward
Akeem Archer put the Penguins on the board in the 37th minute, finishing a first-half chance to cut the deficit to 2–1 after Highline had jumped out early with goals in the 25th and 30th minutes. Archer's tally gave Clark some momentum heading into halftime as the Penguins looked to rally on the road.
The Thunderbirds, however, took control after the break, adding three goals in the second half to pull away for the win. Clark's defense was tested throughout, as goalkeepers
Patrick Murphy and
Luciano Alvarado combined for four saves against 18 total Highline shots. Despite the pressure, the Penguins managed four shots of their own—three on frame—and generated opportunities from set pieces, including eight corner kicks.
Clark's physicality showed through a tough contest that featured four yellow cards for the Penguins. Highline also saw a red card late in the match, playing a man down over the final minutes.
With the loss, Clark continues to battle through a challenging West Division stretch as postseason positioning heats up.
The Penguins will look to rebound in their next outing when they return home to face division rival South Puget Sound at Kim Christensen Field on Saturday. Show up early, as the Penguins plan to honor their sophomores before the match.
