VANCOUVER, Wash. — Despite a strong second-half push and several late scoring chances, the Clark College women's soccer team came up just short in a 1–0 loss to Lower Columbia on Saturday afternoon at Kim Christensen Field.
The Red Devils struck early, scoring the lone goal of the match in the 3rd minute when Ava Gibbs found the back of the net off an assist from Raelie Guizzotti. From that point on, the Penguins' defense tightened up, holding Lower Columbia scoreless the rest of the way.
Clark goalkeeper Ella Lulich was outstanding between the posts, recording six saves while keeping the Penguins within striking distance. The freshman made several clutch stops in the second half, denying multiple breakaway attempts by Lower Columbia.
On the offensive end, the Penguins outshot the Red Devils 7–6 in the final 45 minutes and had eight shots on goal overall, led by Isabel McCauley, Bella Rodriguez, and Elsa Bice, who each challenged the Lower Columbia keeper multiple times.
Clark earned six corner kicks throughout the contest, including several in the closing minutes, but couldn't find the equalizer despite sustained pressure in the attacking third.
With the result, Clark moves to 5-5-3 in NWAC play. The Penguins will look to bounce back in their next conference matchup as they continue their push toward postseason contention. The scenario is clear for Clark. To make the playoffs, the Penguins will need a win In their final match on Wednesday at Highline and also need Centralia to tie or lose their match against Pierce. A tie or a loss for Clark will end their season.
