ROSEBURG, Ore. — In a decisive victory at Umpqua Community College, the Clark volleyball team swept Umpqua in three sets, showcasing their dominance throughout the match. The Penguins, coming into the game with a 2-6 record, secured their sfirst win in conference play.
From the onset, Clark demonstrated their offensive prowess, setting the tone with a 25-20 win in the first set. Led by setter Taylee Wilson's precise distribution, Clark's attackers capitalized on opportunities, notably Sydney George and Ruby Ochoa, who combined for 14 kills in the match. George's athleticism and Ochoa's consistency proved challenging for Umpqua's defense, which struggled to contain Clark's varied attacks.
The second set saw Umpqua, now 1-10 on the season, attempt to rally behind Grace Johnson's powerful hitting, but Clark's defensive organization, anchored by libero Olivia Brown with 10 digs, thwarted any momentum shifts. Despite a more competitive effort from Umpqua, Clark closed out the set 25-20, fueled by Emily Fleetwood's crucial service aces.
Entering the third set with a 2-0 lead, Clark maintained their intensity, seizing control early with a series of blocks and kills. Middle blocker Maggie Skinner contributed key defensive stops, while Josie Becker's precise setting allowed Clark to exploit gaps in Umpqua's defense. Despite a late push from Umpqua, led by Elise Zijlstra and Kadyn Atkinson, Clark clinched the set and match, 25-21.
