SALEM, Ore. - In an electrifying match at the Storm Center, Chemeketa emerged victorious in a hard-fought battle against Clark College, winning the decisive fifth set to secure a 3-2 victory. The game showcased intense rallies and exceptional individual performances from both teams.
The match opened with Clark seizing the first set with a narrow 25-23 margin, capitalizing on precise attacks and solid defensive efforts. Chemeketa responded strongly in the second set, dominating with a 25-13 victory, led by Lucy Walker's impressive offensive display and Ahnika Tryon's key contributions at the net.
As the match progressed, Chemeketa continued to showcase their resilience, taking the third set 25-18 with a balanced offensive approach and effective blocking. Clark College, determined to stay in the game, staged a remarkable comeback in the fourth set, overcoming a resilient Chemeketa side to win 28-26, fueled by Olivia Brown's powerful kills and Sydney George's stellar defensive play.
Heading into the decisive fifth set, both teams battled fiercely with momentum shifting back and forth. Chemeketa maintained their composure in the critical moments, leveraging Hannah Callaway's clutch kills and Taylor Detrant's precise setting to edge out Clark College 15-13, ultimately sealing the match victory.
Lucy Walker led Chemeketa's offensive charge with an impressive 15 kills and 21 digs, showcasing her versatility and impact throughout the match. Taylor Detrant orchestrated the team's offense with 40 assists and contributed crucial defensive plays, while Brianna Beauchamp and Nicole Ebbs provided solid support at the net and in the back row.
Despite the loss, the penguins exhibited resilience and determination, highlighted by Sydney George's 27 digs and Olivia Brown's 9 kills and 22 digs. Taylee Wilson contributed 16 assists and played a key role in Clark's defensive efforts.
With this result, Chemeketa improves to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in conference play, positioning themselves well for upcoming matchups. Clark College, now 4-8 overall and 2-3Â in conference play, looks to regroup and build on their strong performance as they continue their season.
Next up, the penguins will host top-seeded Linn Benton (19-0, 5-0), Friday at the O'Connell Sports Center at 6:00pm.
