Clark Falls 2-1 at Centralia Despite Strong Offensive Effort

Centralia, Wash. — The Clark College women's soccer team held an early lead and generated consistent offensive pressure throughout the match, but Centralia College rallied for a 2-1 victory Saturday afternoon.

The loss moves the Penguins to 0-2-1 overall and 0-1-1 in NWAC play,  while Centralia improves to 3-0-4 overall and 1-0-2 in conference play.

Clark came out aggressively, putting three shots on goal during the opening half and taking an early lead in the 15th minute. Lainey Haden found the back of the net at 14:42, finishing a scoring opportunity set up by Isabel McCauley.

The Penguins carried the 1-0 advantage into halftime behind a strong defensive effort. Goalkeeper Ana Garling made two saves during the opening 45 minutes to keep Centralia off the scoreboard.

Clark continued to create chances after halftime. The Penguins finished with 10 shots, including six on goal, while Centralia recorded 11 shots and seven on target. Clark's six shots on goal matched Centralia's seven, keeping the Penguins within striking distance throughout the second half.

Isabel McCauley led Clark with five shots and three shots on goal, consistently testing the Centralia defense. Rodriguez added three shots, putting two on frame, while Haden finished with one shot and converted Clark's lone goal.

Rodriguez nearly doubled Clark's lead early in the second half when her 60th-minute shot struck the crossbar. McCauley also forced several saves from Centralia goalkeeper Taybree Hansen, including shots in the 58th, 61st and 80th minutes.

Centralia tied the match at 47:20 when Mialissa Waldram scored, then took a 2-1 lead in the 72nd minute on a goal from Lina McDaniel.

Clark continued to push for an equalizer until the final whistle. Rodriguez forced another save in the closing seconds, while McCauley finished the afternoon with three shots on goal.

The Penguins also earned five saves from their goalkeepers, with Garling recording two saves in the first half and Eleanor Allison making three saves over the final 45 minutes.

Clark's defensive effort limited Centralia to five shots in the second half, while the Penguins generated seven second-half shots of their own.

Despite the result, Clark demonstrated its ability to create scoring opportunities, finishing with 10 total shots, six shots on goal and five saves while battling one of the NWAC's unbeaten teams.

The Penguins will look to build on the strong offensive performance as they continue NWAC play vs Grays Harbor (0-4, 0-2) Wednesday at home.
