VANCOUVER, Wash. — The Clark College men's soccer team battled throughout 90 minutes Wednesday night but fell to Highline College, 3-1, at Kim Christensen Field.
The Penguins created several scoring opportunities and finished the match with eight shots, including five on goal, while goalkeeper Glenn Kolibas recorded four saves in 66:59 of action. Aedan Pena added two saves during the final 23 minutes in goal.
Clark came out with offensive pressure early. Evan Roscoe registered Clark's first shot of the night in the 19th minute, forcing a save from the Highline goalkeeper. Roscoe finished with two shots and one shot on goal.
The Penguins continued to generate opportunities late in the opening half. Maxim Moscovciuc put a shot on frame in the 28th minute, while Roscoe added another attempt moments later. Jackson Curtis also tested the Highline defense with a header at the end of the half.
Highline broke through in the 31st minute when Drew Diaz scored to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.
Highline added to its lead just 2:39 into the second half when Peter Scheffler scored, making it 2-0.
Clark continued to push forward, and James Feuerbacher put a shot on goal in the 64th minute, forcing a save from Highline goalkeeper Joey Villanueva.
The Penguins finally broke through in the 69th minute. Aaron Anitok-Brokken converted a penalty kick for his first goal of the seasons, cutting the Highline lead to 2-1. Anitok-Brokken finished the match with two shots, including one shot on goal.
Highline answered less than five minutes later when Zack Robertson scored to restore a two-goal advantage.
Clark continued to look for another opening in the final minutes, with Ian Catarina-Cruz recording a shot in the 80th minute.
The Penguins finished with five saves by Kolibas and Pena combined, while Highline held a 16-8 advantage in total shots.
Clark moves to 1-2-1 overall and 1-2-1 in conference play. The Penguins will return to action with their next scheduled match that takes place at Centralia on Saturday, September 19th. Kickoff is set for 2:15pm.
