Softball Season Ends With Two Losses to Mt. Hood

VANCOUVER, WA- Clark College wrapped up its 2026 softball season Thursday at Raines Field, facing one of the NWAC's top programs in a doubleheader against Mt. Hood Community College.

The Saints entered the day with a 43-6 record and showed their offensive firepower in an 8-0 victory in the opener before completing the sweep with a 14-3 win in the nightcap.

In game one, Mt. Hood broke open a scoreless contest with a five-run second inning. Suntaya Riddle started the rally with a two-run home run before Abigail Huspek and Taylor Donahue added RBI extra-base hits to stretch the lead. The Saints later added three more runs in the fourth inning behind an RBI walk from Kate Dunham and a two-run double by Orie Rau.

Clark battled throughout the opener and turned in a clean defensive effort without committing an error. Madison Logan and Mylee Burrows recorded the Penguins' two hits, while Burrows also provided solid relief work in the circle, allowing just two earned runs over 3.2 innings against the high-powered Saints lineup.

Mt. Hood pitchers Gracie Huston and Katie Klaumann combined for eight strikeouts in the shutout win as the Saints improved to 44-6 overall.

The Penguins responded with more offensive production in the second game, collecting seven hits and scoring three runs against one of the NWAC's top staffs.

Mt. Hood again struck early, scoring six runs in the first inning behind RBI hits from Chloe McKenzie, Ambur Livingston and Rau. Clark answered in the bottom half when Sophia Lawrence delivered an RBI double to score Delaney Bollman and put the Penguins on the board.

The Saints added four runs in the third inning, highlighted by McKenzie's three-run homer, and extended the lead with another four-run frame in the fourth.

Clark continued to compete late in the game. Jessica Tomberlin and Amber Barela reached base in the fourth inning before Rylee Purdom lined a two-run single to center field, bringing home both runners for the Penguins' final runs of the season.

Lawrence finished with two hits, including a double and RBI, while Barela also collected two hits. Purdom drove in two runs, and Logan and Burrows each added hits in the finale.

Clark used four pitchers in the second game, highlighted by 2.2 innings of relief from Shayla Seppala and a scoreless fifth inning from Tessa Treesh.

The doubleheader marked the conclusion of the Penguins' 2026 campaign as Clark finished the season with a 10-38 overall record.
