PASCO, Wash. — Clark College battled to the final possession but came up just short Wednesday afternoon, falling 57–54 to Lower Columbia College in the first round of the NWAC Tournament at Columbia Basin College.
Clark (17-13, 9-7) controlled much of the first half, using strong defense and rebounding to build a 31–24 halftime lead. The Penguins limited Lower Columbia's shooting early and generated second-chance opportunities that helped them dictate the tempo.
Guard Ari Richardson led Clark with 20 points, adding eight rebounds, three steals, and a block in a full 40-minute effort. Richardson knocked down three 3-pointers and consistently created offense for the Penguins.
Clark also got balanced scoring from Micah Gentry and Noah Tostovrsnik, who each finished with 11 points. Tostovrsnik recorded a near double-double with 10 rebounds and five assists, while Gentry added two free throws late to keep Clark within striking distance.
Forward Samuel Malm gave the Penguins a major boost off the bench, dominating the glass with 13 rebounds — including nine offensive boards — while contributing five points.
Lower Columbia (21-6, 10-4) rallied in the second half, outscoring Clark 33–23 over the final 20 minutes. K. Jackman-Thomas led the Red Devils with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while James Grose added 13 points, including three 3-pointers.
Despite shooting 31 percent from the field, Clark stayed competitive by matching Lower Columbia on the boards 39–39 and generating 18 offensive rebounds. The Penguins also limited turnovers, committing just seven in the game.
Clark had opportunities late but could not find the tying basket in the closing moments as Lower Columbia held on for the three-point victory.
The Penguins will say goodbye to some key players off this year's team, but should return South Region Freshman of the Year Tristan Pratt, and Second Team All-Region guard Ari Richardson for next season.
