Clark Jumps Out Early, Holds Off South Puget Sound for 3-1 Win

VANCOUVER, Wash. – A fast start proved to be all Clark College needed on Wednesday afternoon, as the Penguins netted three first-half goals and held strong defensively down the stretch to earn a 3-1 victory over South Puget Sound in NWAC men's soccer action.

Freshman forward Hulises Najera set the tone early, striking twice in the opening nine minutes. He opened the scoring in the 4th minute, finishing off a setup from Andrew Altukoff, before adding his second less than five minutes later off an assist from Julio Mondragon.

Clark extended the lead just before halftime when Mondragon broke through for his first goal of the season in the 45th minute, sending the Penguins into the break with a commanding 3-0 advantage.

South Puget Sound pressed hard in the second half, outshooting Clark 16-4 after the break, but the Penguins' backline and goalkeeper Patrick Murphy stood tall. Murphy racked up 10 saves, including eight in the second half, to protect the lead. The Clippers finally broke through in the 84th minute on a goal from Alex Canning, assisted by Djibril Corrielus, but Clark's defense shut the door the rest of the way.

Clark improves to 2-0-2 overall and 2-0-2 in NWAC play, while South Puget Sound falls to 2-3-1, 1-2-0 NWAC.

The Penguins will look to carry their unbeaten start into their next match on Saturday, when they host Tacoma at Kim Christensen Field.  Kickoff is set for 12:00pm.
