Clark Men Fall Short Against Portland in Hard-Fought Battle

Recapping last night's Men's Basketball action at PCC

PORTLAND, Ore. - Despite a strong first-half performance, the Clark College men's basketball team couldn't hold off a second-half surge from Portland Community College, falling 82-64 on the road Wednesday night.

The Penguins (17-8, 9-4 NWAC) came out firing, taking a 36-34 lead into halftime, but Portland responded with a dominant second-half performance, outscoring Clark 48-28 to pull away.

Esary and McMillan Lead the Charge

Clark was led by Jackson Esary, who delivered a well-rounded performance with 19 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 blocks. Theo McMillan also made a major impact, scoring 16 points while grabbing 9 rebounds and dishing out 4 assists before fouling out late in the game.

Beau Swett chipped in 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists, knocking down two three-pointers. Zion Milare added 8 points and 4 rebounds, providing key defensive plays with2 blocks.

Second-Half Struggles Prove Costly

Clark's early defensive intensity kept Portland in check, limiting them to just 37.7% shooting for the game. However, rebounding became a major factor as Portland held a 58-44 advantage on the boards, including 22 offensive rebounds, leading to 23 second-chance points.

The Penguins also struggled from the free-throw line, converting just 6-of-15 attempts (40%), while Portland capitalized on their opportunities, making 18-of-26 free throws (69.2%).

Turning Points

  • Clark led by as many as nine points in the first half, but Portland closed the gap before halftime.
  • Portland opened the second half with a 10-2 run, taking the lead for good.
  • The Penguins were held to just 28 second-half points, struggling to find rhythm against Portland's defensive adjustments.
Looking Ahead

Despite the loss, Clark remains in the hunt for a strong NWAC playoff position. The Penguins will look to bounce back in their next contest as they return home for a crucial matchup in the conference standings.

Stay tuned for updates as Clark continues its push toward postseason play!
