PASCO, Wash. — Despite a pair of dominant scoring performances from Mia Hicks-Oliver and Emily Peabody, the Clark College Penguins couldn't overcome an explosive Columbia Basin offense on Friday afternoon, falling 95–70 in NWAC non-conference play.
Hicks-Oliver was electric on both ends, pouring in 24 points, grabbing five rebounds, and racking up a remarkable eight steals in 38 minutes. The sophomore guard was relentless attacking the rim and anchoring Clark's pressure defense, which forced 19 total steals on the day.
Peabody matched her with 24 points of her own, shooting 10-of-18 from the field while adding eight rebounds and a pair of steals. The forward was steady all game and scored at least six points in every quarter, helping Clark outscore CBC 44–35 in the paint.
Clark (0–3) weathered an early onslaught after the Hawks opened the game on a heavy scoring run, but the Penguins maintained their composure. After trailing 28–11 after one quarter, Clark fought back to score 15 in the second and 21 in the third, showing improved offensive flow and defensive energy as the game progressed.
Freshman guard April Cruz delivered one of her best all-around efforts of the season, finishing with five assists, four steals, and three offensive boards, helping Clark disrupt CBC's rhythm despite the deficit. Yazmin Rios added nine points and five rebounds, while Reaiah Hall chipped in three points off the bench.
Turnovers ultimately proved costly, as Clark's 25 giveaways led to 30 Columbia Basin points. Still, the Penguins showed continued growth, winning several hustle categories including offensive rebounds (14) and fast-break points.
Columbia Basin (5–0) was led by a balanced offensive attack with five players scoring in double figures, shooting 54.5% from the field and 64% from three.
Clark returns to the floor tomorrow for game two of the Columbia Basin Tournament against Walla Walla.
