VANCOUVER, Wash. - In a tense matchup, the Clark Penguins narrowly held off a late comeback attempt by Pierce to secure a hard-fought 7-6 victory. The game was marked by dramatic swings in momentum, with both teams battling fiercely until the final out.
The early innings saw Pierce take control of the game, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning behind timely hits from Lawson and Tungsvik. However, Clark quickly responded in the bottom of the inning, capitalizing on a few miscues from Pierce's defense to plate three runs and take a 3-2 lead.
The middle innings saw both teams trading blows, with Pierce tying the game at 3-3 in the top of the third before Clark regained the lead with a run in the fourth. However, Pierce mounted a spirited rally in the sixth inning, highlighted by a clutch three-run double from Tungsvik, to take a 6-3 lead and put the pressure on Clark.
But the penguins refused to back down, staging a dramatic comeback of their own in the bottom of the sixth inning. Annali Lindersmith's towering three-run triple sparked a four-run rally, propelling Clark back into the lead at 7-6. Despite a late scoring opportunity for Pierce in the seventh inning, Clark's defense held firm, securing the victory and improving their record to 1-4 on the season.
Pitcher Haylee Newton delivered a gutsy performance on the mound for Clark, battling through six innings of work and allowing just two earned runs while striking out two batters. Newton's resilience and composure under pressure played a crucial role in securing the win for the penguins.
Offensively, Lindersmith led the way for Clark with a stellar performance at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a triple, three RBIs, and two walks. Her timely hitting and disciplined approach proved to be the difference-maker in a tightly contested game.
Despite the loss, Pierce showed resilience and determination throughout the game, refusing to go down without a fight. With strong performances from players like ungsvik and Watts, Pierce demonstrated their potential to compete at a high level and will look to bounce back in their next outing.
With the victory, the Clark Penguins hope to build momentum as they continue their season, drawing inspiration from their hard-fought win and looking ahead to future challenges with confidence and determination.
Next up the penguins (2-4) will travel to Bremerton, Washington as they take on Olympic (0-2) Friday, March 1st in a non-conference double-header.
