Volleyball Earns 5 Set Victory on the Road

In a dramatic showdown that kept fans on the edge of their seats, Clark College faced off against Southwestern Oregon in a nail-biting five-set match. Despite taking an early lead, the lakers won both set 3 & 4 forcing a 5th set.

The match began with Clark asserting their presence, taking the first set 25-19 behind strong performances from Ruby Ochoa and Sydney George. Ochoa, with 19 kills and 11 errors, struggled with efficiency but was pivotal in keeping the momentum early. Meanwhile, George added a solid 10 kills, contributing significantly to Clark's first-set triumph.

However, Southwestern Oregon retaliated fiercely in the second set, leveraging their home-court advantage, but ultimately falling in the set, 27-25. Davis Wright emerged as a key player for the home team, racking up 21 kills with a .333 hitting percentage, while also aiding in defensive efforts with 19 digs.

The third set saw Clark struggle, ultimately losing 21-25 as Southwestern Oregon found their rhythm. Clark's offense, which had shown promise early, faltered under the pressure, highlighted by only a .106 team hitting percentage throughout the match. Despite this, Clark's defense, anchored by Taylee Wilson and her 12 digs, managed to keep the score close.

With the match at 2-1 in favor of the penguins, the lakers fought back in the fourth set, displaying grit and determination. A tightly contested battle ended with Southwestern Oregon narrowly edging out the competition, winning 25-18 and forcing a decisive fifth set.

The fifth set proved to be a rollercoaster of emotions. Both teams exchanged leads, but it was Clark's relentless attack that ultimately prevailed. The Lakers struggled to find their footing, managing only 10 points in the final set compared to Clark's 15. Key moments included several unforced errors and missed opportunities, which hampered the laker's chances of clinching the match.

The win put Clark back in the mix for a post-season opportunity, with the second half of the season just getting underway.

Next up, the penguins return home Wednesday, October 23rd at 6:00pm to take on Umpqua.
