Volleyball triumphs in thrilling 5-set battle against Umpqa Riverhawks

Vancouver, Wash. - The volleyball court at Clark College was transformed into a battleground as the Clark Penguins hosted the Umpqua River Hawks in an epic showdown. The Penguins emerged victorious in a five-set thriller, winning 3-2 in a match.

The Penguins drew first blood, taking the opening set 25-19 with an impressive display of teamwork and precision.

However, the River Hawks were far from defeated. They stormed back in the second and third sets, dominating 25-11 and 25-21, respectively, leaving the Penguins reeling and needing a response.

And respond they did. The penguins roared back in the fourth set, winning convincingly at 25-17, setting up a thrilling fifth and final set that would decide the match.

The fifth set was a nail-biter, with both teams trading points. In the end, the penguins held their nerve, securing the final two points with a 16-14 scoreline to clinch the match.

Leading the charge for the Penguins were TT Gaopoa and Anna Poen, who delivered a masterclass in attacking. TT Gaopoa's thunderous 23 kills left the River Hawks struggling to defend, while Anna Poen added 14 crucial kills of her own. Their combined offensive firepower was a sight to behold.

Jordan Caldwell showcased her serving prowess with three aces that disrupted the River Hawks' defense and rattled their composure. Meanwhile, TT Gaopoa's four blocks were instrumental in halting the River Hawks' attacks at the net.

In the setting department, Josie Becker orchestrated the offense with 35 assists, displaying exceptional precision and decision-making. Jordan Caldwell provided valuable support with 20 assists, proving her versatility on the court.

Bryana Barry anchored the penguins' defense with 12 crucial digs, showcasing her agility and determination in retrieving challenging balls and keeping the rally alive.

The match was a rollercoaster of emotions, with momentum swinging back and forth between the two teams. The Penguins' resilience and never-give-up attitude shone brightly as they rallied from a 2-1 deficit to secure a thrilling victory.

Next up the penguins travel to Eugene, Oregon to compete against Lane (2-1) on Friday, September 22.
