Mike Hickey

Mike Hickey recently accepted the job as the Clark College men and women's cross country head coach. Hickey comes to the Penguin Nation after serving as the head cross country coach at nationally ranked Camas High School.

Hickey brings with him a wealth of coaching experience at Clackamas College, Portland State University, George Fox University and Camas High School, studying different areas of human behavior.

During his 15 years of coaching Mike has coached two High School Junior All-Americans (Michael Devenport and Alexa Efraimson), 23 Junior College All Americans, eight All-Conference Big Sky Athletes, three NWAACC Championship Teams, two national Junior College event leaders (Andrew Dodge, 1500m and Paul Kezes ,5k), two WIAA State Championship Teams (2011/2012) and 11 first team WIAA All-State performers (eight at CHS; three at Colfax HS).

Hickey coached Paul Kezes to a position on the 2005 team USA World Cross Country team.  Mike has been recognized as Coach of the Year three times by NWAACC Conference and twice by the Washington state high school coaches.

As an athlete running at the University of Oregon Hickey gained valuable insight into the cultural elements of a great distance running program.  These insights include team building, empowering student athletes to own their performance, brining passion to track and cross country in conversations, workouts, and competition.  Additionally Hickey’s philosophy includes simulation and adaptation, which are present in all elements of his training, planning, and racing situations.

Hickey is actively involved in the USATF education program, with most beliefs learned through courses taken in the USATF certification program (level 2: distance and jumps; level 3 distance (in progress).

The Vancouver, WA, native earned his Bachelor's from Washington State University, Pullman and a Master's from Portland State University.
